Warrington’s first home Super League game of the season was delayed in amusing circumstances on Thursday night when Whizzy Rascal lived up the name.
The match ball at the Halliwell Jones Stadium was delivered by a young driver in a mini BMW, who sparked hilarious scenes after driving off with the ball.
Instead of driving straight to the kick-off spot, the driver steered to the far side of the pitch and after being encouraged to turn around, decided it would then be more fun to carry on to the opposite touchline.
Players from both Warrington and visitors Castleford all saw the funny side as they were kept waiting in front of the live television cameras.
It also brought a huge smile to Warrington coach Daryl Powell in his first home game in charge of the club.
After the game finally got under way, Powell’s side went on to produce a dominant display in a 34-0 win.
