The gulf in class has been totally absent from this game between two sides at opposite ends of League Two.
But Chris Westwood's header on the stroke of half time means the Bees' are behind at half time.
The header at the near post from Matt Bloomfield's corner was so simple for Westwood, who unmarked had plenty of time to pick his spot.
Relegation threatened Barnet have bossed swathes of the first half, hitting the crossbar once and carving out chances with Mark Marshall's precision passing and Matthew Parson's high energy play from left back.
Mark Hughes saw his header palmed onto the bar from keeper Nikki Bull on 16 minutes, then Clovis Kamdjo's follow-up got blocked in the melee.
But Barnet have been made to rue their lack of a goal, which Wanderers punishing them in injury time.
Wanderers have shown few signs of their promotion credentials. Heavily reliant on veteran Gareth Ainsworth, other creative outlets like Ben Stevens hardly got a touch of the ball.
Parsons could yet get tied up dealing with Ainsworth on the left wing. Keeper Jake Cole was quiet except for when coming to deal with the veteran's assortment of chips and passes into the area.
Up top for Barnet, Mark Marshall had the chance to make an instant impact on two minutes for the hosts. But he checked his run inside the box in expectation of a linesman's flag that never came, after Rossi Jarvis' neat pass. The delay proved fatal for the chance and his shot was blocked.
Stopper Jake Cole got his first taste of action on 11 minutes, when he smothered Kevin Betsy's poked effort duirng a goal-mouth scramble. It was a simple long ball by veteran Gareth Ainsworth over Barnet's backline that put the hosts on the back foot.
Barnet went so close to taking the lead on 16 minutes when Hughes' header rattled the bar from Marshall's cross. It was exactly the sort of display boss Paul Fairclough would have wanted in the current plight.
Main man Marshall was Barnet's biggest threat. One delicious effort midway through the half with the outside of his boot sent Izale McLeod speeding off into a one-on-one, but Wanderers keeper Nikki Bull just beat him to the ball.
There was no glimpse of the visitors own qualities until a slick diagonal passing move from one end of the pitch to the other. Skipper Joe Devera was in place to head clear Ainsworth's final cross.
There is plenty to play for in the second period against opponents who generally were bested in every catergory that matters by Barnet, bar one - taking their chances.
