Barnet boss Paul Fairclough has called on the club's strikers to find their shooting boots sharpish, or other players will be brought in to find the goals needed to blast the Bees out of trouble, writes Ross Davies.
Stand-in manager Fairclough saw his misfiring forwards fluff their lines during a devastating spell of pressure against Torquay United at Underhill on Saturday. And it cost them dearly, the Gulls showing the hosts how it was done by scoring with their first attack and going on to coast home 3-0.
Izale McLeod, usually so ruthless in front of goal, was the chief culprit, almost tripping over the ball when through on goal and missing his kick when it seemed easier to score, as Barnet dominated the opening exchanges.
Fairclough is well aware things must change immediately, with the club's position looking more perilous with each passing week.
The Bees are once again propping up the League Two table and are two points from safety.
“We need someone to come in and score some goals,” he said. “Defenders and goalkeepers get caned when they make a mistake, forwards can get away with it. But we all have to be accountable. We've all got to do our jobs.
“The forwards have got to do what they're supposed to do and finish.
“I'd be talking about something totally different if we had taken those chances (against Torquay).
“We've only scored three goals in our last six games. We're not bad now at stopping goals going in. We've proved that in a lot of draws these last few weeks. But obviously we're not scoring any goals. The players that were scoring for us seem to have dried up, so we have to address that situation very, very quickly.”
Fairclough conceded draws on the road are no longer good enough, and revealed he would bring in more players if required.
“I'm quite confident I can manufacture a point away from home and if we were a mid-table side or a top of the league side that would be enough. But we're not. We're in a situation now that we have to go and win all the games we play in.
“That's going to be a real, real challenge for me. The players need to look at it very closely and they'll have to stand up now. Nobody else is going to help us. I'll bring in new players if it's going to help.”
Barnet make the trip to mid-table Cheltenham Town on Saturday and then travel to Southend United on Tuesday.
