The weather was kind to the 12 intrepid Wingate & Finchley fans who completed the 13-mile walk from the Abrahams Stadium to Waltham Abbey’s Capershotts ground on Saturday.
The walk was part of Wingate & Finchley FC’s fund-raising work for Jewish Blind and Disabled (JBD), the only Jewish charity providing mobility apartments for people of all ages with physical disabilities or impaired vision.
Tenants range from their early 20s, and encompass a wide spectrum of disabilities. The charity is particularly important to the club who are proud of their Jewish heritage, and wider links with the Jewish community in North London.
A good time was had by all of the particpants, although mumblings of stiff legs – certainly from the older of the fraternity – was a common theme upon arrival.
The club would like to thank Waltham Abbey FC for generously advertising the walk in advance, with special thanks going to Abbey club secretary Derek Bird for his enthusiasm and support during the event.
Money is still coming in, and, with the pledge of further donations, it is anticipated the final amount raised shall reach over £2,000. The club would like to thank everyone who contributed to making the walk nothing but an unqualified success. The funds shall be presented on Sunday to JBD.
Those still wishing to donate can do so by going to www.justgiving.com/wingate-finchley
