Edgware Town put up a brave fight at much-fancied Dorking in their opening Ryman League Division Two fixture on Saturday.
The Wares went down 2-1 but were unlucky not to come home with at least a share of the spoils.
Stuart Blackburne and Dean Sylvester gave the hosts much cause for concern in the first half, but it was Dorking who went in at the break two goals up thanks to a brace from Lee Smith.
It was Wares captain Richard Morton who brought his team back into it on the hour. A mazy run by Blackburne and smart footwork from Sylvester put Morton through for the goal.
And the same player nearly scored a second, but Richard Dee's long free-kick was just too far in front to reach, with Morton sliding at full length in a vain bid to connect with the ball.
Sub Joe Charles also caused problems when he came on, but the Wares were unable to find an equaliser that their second-half pressure deserved.
