Shaftesbury Barnet finished fifth in round two of the British Athletics League.

The club enjoyed a thrilling day in Manchester, with the lead changing hands between six of the eight clubs throughout the afternoon.

Man of the match Greg Rutherford got the team off to a great start with a 7.88m victory in the long jump, with Nick Stanisavljevic taking the B string in a PB of 7.23m.

ln fact, the latter had a great day. He also took a second place in the B triple jump with 14.40m, before returning to win the high jump with an SB of 2.17m.

He was ably supported by Daniel Lampard, who won the B high jump with a PB equalling 2.00m.

Nathan Fox, the club's top junior, was third in the triple jump with 14.77m. The pole vault also produced good points thanks to Michael Read (fourth) and Douglas Curwen-Reed (third).

Nich Smith and Stuart Benson had a good day in the sprints, with the former beating a very talented field to win the 100m in 10.34sec and then, in his first 200m for some time, was just edged out in a legal 21.17, his second best ever time. Benson was runner up in the 100m and third in the 200m.

ln a middle-distance squad weakened by illness and injuries, it was debut time for the talented juniors. There were PBs in the 400m for Matthew Webster, in the 800m for Charles Gunning, and for Tommy Bryant in the 1500m. Jake Shelley picked up a very useful third place in the B 1500m.

Mid-race injury struck Julian Adeniran whilst leading the 110mH, which could rule him out for the rest of the season, a real loss to the squad.

Club decathlon record-holder Willem Coertzen came through in the B to win in a PB of 14.11.

The 400mH saw UK U23 champion Lloyd Gumbs maintain his winning form in 51.45. His next run will be in the European U23 Championships later this month.

In the javelin, Coertzen gained an SB of 66.70m and David Parker came second in the B event with 65.61m.

Special mention must go to Charles Romito who filled the gaps in the 400mH and 3000m steeplechase. He completed both races and collected two very valuable points.

Another athlete to undertake a tough double was Glen Watts who finished fourth in the steeplechase, and then came back within the hour to run a PB in the 5k. James Trapmore also filled in at the last minute to collect valuable points in the B string 800m.
