A boxing academy that has an England champion among its members held a dinner boxing show to mark its 90th anniversary.

Founded in 1934, the Lion Club for Young People in Pitfield Street, Hackney, celebrated nine decades of training future generations with a dinner and boxing show at the Prince Regent Hotel, South Woodford, on Friday, November 15.

The event featured the Lion Boxing Academy competing against boxers from the Southern Counties ABA, with all attendees enjoying a night of amateur boxing.

The club had faced challenges in recent years, including closure due to the pandemic and the loss of its chairman and three coaches.

However, the beginning of the year saw the club's growth from three carded members and one coach to 35 carded boxers and a more extensive coaching team thanks to the appointment of four new trustees.

The club's membership now exceeds 100, with daily inquiries from prospective newcomers.

Notable boosts include a visit from boxing promoter Eddie Hearn and Matchroom representatives in August and member Amber Muggleton becoming an England Champion in her category.

The evening event also attracted professional and ex-boxers, including Francis Ampofo, Fayez Uddin, Jimmy Sains, and George Liddard.

With around 200 guests, the nine bouts ended with a narrow victory for the Lions, who won five out of nine.
