Dean Brennan blamed individual errors after Barnet’s 3-1 National League loss at York City, as the Bees suffered a second consecutive defeat for the first time this season.
Chesterfield loanee Bailey Hobson opened the scoring for the visitors on 37 minutes, but York rallied to level with virtually the last kick of the first half before securing the points with two late strikes.
“It was a very tight game. In the first half we had some exceptional opportunities to go and make it one or two (nil),” said Brennan.
“They had a good chance at the start of the first half, where Hayes made a good save. I just thought it was a tight game and a good game for our division, really. Two contrasts in systems, similar styles, but the systems are different.
"At the end of the day, we’ve lost because of two errors, and then we haven’t done enough when we turned the ball over in their half and pressed them into getting some fantastic opportunities.
“Idris (Kanu) missed a great chance at the back post in the first half; Nicke (Kabamba) had a one-on-one where he miscontrolled the ball when (Zak) Brunt reversed it back to him. We’ve just got to be better in those scenarios.
“The timing of their first goal is an absolute killer. I've seen the second goal back, and our keeper should save it.”
It leaves Barnet third, with Forest Green Rovers top after beating Ebbsfleet United by the same scoreline. But Brennan backed his players to react quickly after a disappointing few days.
“There’s some good players in both teams. Two managers who play on the front foot, with speed and energy,” he said when asked about the level exhibited by both sides on Tuesday.
“They are two teams that are well coached. The difference, in the end, is the two errors we make, and that goes for them."
A poor challenge by York keeper Harrison Male on Zak Brunt saw the midfielder go down in pain in a big moment Brennan thought was refereed incorrectly.
“There was a huge refereeing moment in the game where we’ve pressed them and the ball’s turned over. Brunty’s got a gash in his shin. It’s about four inches long, and their goalkeeper’s two-footed him. It’s terrible refereeing and a really poor challenge," he added.
"I’m not having a go at the lad. He’s trying to get the ball, but it’s a red card and a big moment in the game. I thought the referee didn’t have the minerals to execute what should've happened there.”
Barnet will look to return to winning ways when they host Rochdale in the National League on Saturday, with the visitors currently in fourth just three points behind Brennan’s side.
