A Barnet Copthall swimmer has been selected for the European Junior Championships set to be held in Kazan, Russia this summer.
Fleur Lewis, 15, was selected following her standout performances at the recent British Championships in Glasgow where she finished first in the Junior 1500m Freestyle and third in the Junior 800m Freestyle.
At this summer’s championships, to be held between July 3 and July 7, she will be swimming in both the 800m and 1500m Freestyle events.
Lewis will be joined by a total of 30 swimmers that have been selected to represent Great Britain in Russia.
The teenager was National Champion at last year’s British Swimming Summer Championships in the 200m Butterfly and 1500m Freestyle event.
She trains extensively at Barnet Copthall Leisure Centre, which includes eight two-hour swimming sessions per week, two of which are before school at 5.15am, and two one-hour land training sessions.
She started lessons with the Better/GLL swim school and progressed throughout the lesson programme before joining the Barnet Training Scheme operated by Better/GLL in partnership with Barnet Copthall Swimming Club.
Rhys Gormley, head coach at Barnet Copthall Swimming Club, said: “Fleur’s selection to the GB team is a perfect example of what can be achieved when hard work, dedication, talent and feistiness is combined with a swimming programme that can accommodate the needs of any level of swimmer.”
An elite squad of 10 swimmers that made the cut for Kazan will also go on to represent Great Britain at the World Junior Championships in Budapest, Hungary from August 20-25.
British Swimming’s head of elite development Tim Jones said: “In amongst the results from the British Championships were some outstanding junior performances and prodigious talent, the likes of which we have not seen for a number of years.”
