Wingate & Finchley kick-started their Bostik Premier Division campaign over the Bank Holiday weekend with an impressive return of four points from a possible six following games against Enfield Town and Whitehawk.
Keith Rowland’s Blues had to settle for a 1-1 draw against their near neighbours Enfield on Monday with Marc Charles-Smith finding the net after 23 minutes.
However, Enfield improved in the second half and levelled with 18 minutes remaining through Aaron Greene.
A trip to East Sussex had yielded Wingate’s first league victory of the season on Saturday with a 3-2 win against Whitehawk.
Despite a promising start the Blues were stunned by a Jason Williams goal against the run of play after 28 minutes, but they were level within nine minutes of that setback.
Lewis Putman was fouled in the box and Marc Weatherstone fired home the resulting penalty to level the scores.
Weatherstone again converted from the spot in first-half injury-time after Aaron Goode was penalised for handball.
And with seven minutes remaining, Scott Shulton’s free-kick eventually found Charles-Smith for goal number three, before Whitehawk set up a tense finish when Luke Emberson headed home on 89 minutes.
Hendon’s unbeaten start to the Southern League season is over after they crashed to a 4-2 defeat at home to Harrow Borough on Bank Holiday Monday.
Two strikes from in-form forward Ricardo German proved to be mere consolation efforts on a disappointing afternoon for James Gray’s charges.
The Greens were forced to settle for a 3-3 draw in a pulsating encounter with Taunton Town on Saturday.
It was, however, the second consecutive visit to Somerset for Hendon that was blighted by a last-minute equaliser.
There was no shortage of controversy either as Howard Hall was controversially penalised for handball and Matt Wright fired home his second of the game at the death.
Hendon had led 3-1 as German had scored a hat-trick either side of Wright’s first strike of the match, with Dan Sullivan netting the other.
