Barnet came from behind to beat strugglers Dagenham & Redbridge 2-1 at the Hive as goals from Wesley Fonguck and Jack Barham secured a second consecutive National League victory.
The Bees suffered the early setback of conceding in the opening minute of the match as Elliott Romain collected a ball over the top to finish well.
However, first strikes for the club from Fonguck and Barham turned the result around and handed John Still the win against his former employers, who remain rooted to the foot of the table.
Fresh from their opening league success of the season at Chesterfield on Saturday, confidence would have been high heading into their second game of the Bank Holiday weekend but they were left stunned by Romain’s clinical finish so early in the contest.
To their credit the Bees settled relatively quickly afterwards and were making inroads of their own as Barham fired wide from 20 yards following good approach play by strike partner Byron Harrison, before Jack Taylor sent a half-volley over Elliott Justham’s crossbar.
The hosts were left aggrieved though, when Justham handled the ball outside of his area only to escape with just a yellow card from referee Adrian Quelch.
But four minutes before half-time their pressure finally took its toll as Fonguck finished with a smart low finish following good work by David Tutonda and Harrison, who had created the opening.
Both sides had chances in the second half as Justham denied Taylor following a free-kick, while Mark Cousins was kept busy to deny Will Wright’s effort through a sea of bodies.
However, it was the Bees who would snatch the lead just after the hour mark when Barham took advantage of a ball that sat up invitingly, lashing a half-volley into the top corner.
Still’s side should have sealed the win late on as both Craig Robson and Harrison were thwarted by some inspired last-ditch defending from the Daggers.
And their profligacy should have been punished in stoppage time as Chike Kandi was denied by an excellent save from Cousins, coming after Tomi Adeloye, the Dagenham substitute, wasted two glorious chances to level the game.
But Barnet held on to register their second win in 48 hours, a pair of results that have put a better complexion on the league table as the home side moved away from the relegation zone and up to 17th ahead of Saturday’s trip to 22nd-placed Dover Athletic.
