Saracens winger David Strettle is aiming to establish himself in the England squad this autumn and has his sights firmly set on the home World Cup in 2015.

The 30-year-old has had an intermittent England career, earning 14 caps for his country across six years, but believes he can cement an international spot this season.

“I think I can [establish myself], I think I’ve had a fair crack of the whip - you just hope that your form is good enough for your club to get picked for your country,” he said.

“I’m no different to any other player; you want to show you’re a good rugby player because it obviously means that little bit more the higher up you go.

“The World Cup is definitely a realistic target. You can see how the whole country get behind sporting events – at Wimbledon this summer, at the Olympics last year and even during the Six Nations everyone’s talking about rugby.

“So to be part of a home World Cup would be unbelievable.”

Strettle played the whole game and scored the opening try in England’s first test win over Argentina this summer.

But while he hopes being involved with the tour has strengthened his international cause, Strettle insists his primary focus is on enjoying his rugby.

“I’ve realised that rugby, whether you’re playing for England or for Saracens, can be very intense and I want to make sure I’m enjoying things still," he said.

“I always think sometimes players forget to enjoy the game when you’re playing at the top level so I tried to make a point of enjoying the tour and I did, it was one of the best tours I’ve been on with England.

“We’re lucky at Saracens they don’t want us to play with shackles on - they tell us to go out and express ourselves and that’s how they get the best out of the players.

"I really enjoyed last year and I’m just hoping to do the same again this season.”

Strettle told the Times Series earlier this week he believes Saracens' new signings can take the Men in Black to a different level. Click here for the full story.
