Edgar Davids’ dreadlocks and protective goggles make him one of most recognisable footballers of his generation. But the Dutchman stood out for a different reason in Barnet’s pre-season friendly against Ipswich Town.
When Davids stepped out for the first time at The Hive Stadium, eagle-eyed supporters noticed the number one – traditionally worn by goalkeepers - adorned on the back of his shirt.
Was the former Dutch international set to take up a new position in his 21st year as a professional?
Thankfully Davids lined up in the Barnet midfield and Graham Stack could take up his usual role between the posts.
The sight of an outfield player wearing the number one was certainly unusual but Davids has not been afraid to try something a little bit different.
That is after all, why he is at Barnet.
