It was a game that seemed to be heading towards a penalty shoot-out but a goal in the 118th minute from Jess Trimnell meant Barnet Ladies clinched victory in the Middlesex Senior Cup final against Queens Park Rangers.

The Bees have struggled in the Women’s Premier League this season but their hopes of lifting the trophy were boosted when Katie O’Leary and goalkeeper Sophie Cheadle were ruled out for Rangers.

Eartha Pond, originally named in the R’s midfielder, moved back in goal and she was beaten inside the opening ten minutes.

Stacey Sowden eased passed the QPR defence and she fired past Pond to put the Bees in front. Barnet almost doubled their lead minutes later but Pond palmed Vanna Lee’s volley away.

QPR responded and Kim Meadows was put through on goal only for Barnet goalkeeper Megan Wordington to come and clear the ball.

The chance spurred on Rangers and they equalised in the 30th minute when Kasha Petit slotted past Wordington.

Barnet were on the back foot for the remainder of the half but they managed to go into the interval level.

The Bees started the second period strongly and Sowden failed to hit the target shortly after the restart.

Barnet continued to apply pressure and retook the lead thanks to a strike from Leanne Reidy after Holly Sandon’s free-kick rebounded into her path.

Rangers committed several players forward in search of a second equaliser and the Bees almost added a third goal but Chontelle Lawrence’s shot was tipped onto the post.

It proved an important moment as, with three minutes remaining, Rangers drew level as stand-in goalkeeper Pond fired home a free-kick from 20 yards to send the game into extra-time.

With both teams tiring there were few chances created but, with the match seemingly headed for penalties, Trimnell poked home from close-range to ensure Lydia Bedford’s side lifted the cup.
