The win against London Wasps may not go down in history. It wasn’t the greatest win, it wasn’t a necessarily a must win encounter neither was it a thriller. But one thing is for sure the match will hold a very special place in the heart of one of the Saracens players.
The moment came in the 61st minute; it was when 14 months of injury hell came to an end for Jacques Burger.
For Sarries fans, players and coaches alike there was no greater sight than the Namibian taking to the field.
He is the poster boy for the wolf-pack mentality, with his high work rate, bone crunching hits and never say die attitude.
It would be wrong to say that he came on and set the world alight, but then again no player, no matter how good they are would be able to achieve that after the extent of the injury that Jacques had.
You can never underestimate the importance of his return though, not only for himself but for the rest of the squad.
Sarries are becoming somewhat the kings of the comeback, most notably against Racing Metro away in the Heineken Cup and at Welford Road against Leicester Tigers more recently.
As the business end of the season is seemingly upon us, the matches only get tougher and things will not all be plain sailing for the Men in Black.
If and when their backs are against the wall they will look around and see a teammate who has overcome adversity to be there with them, reminding them that anything is possible with hard work and determination.
The sight of the players’ reactions when the 2010/11 Saracens player of the season took to the field on Saturday says everything you needed to know. They were delighted for him, and he was thrilled to be back.
It demonstrated the tight knit attitude of the squad in one small moment.
No doubt the opposition he faces will not have the same reaction, one of Jacques’ first contributions in a Sarries shirt was to smash London Wasps winger Tom Varndell in spectacular fashion, a video you can still find on YouTube and a moment Varndell would probably like to forget and he isn’t the only person to have received the Burger treatment on occasions.
One thing is for sure though Burger is back and Saracens will be a better team because of it.
