Until the 87th minute, Barnet’s home match against Dagenham & Redbridge was instantly forgettable.
Few chances were created and little quality football had been played. Then Kyle de Silva was sent off. The young midfielder’s challenge on Luke Wilkinson was deemed dangerous. A straight red card was shown.
Barnet battled in the final minutes and managed to keep the Daggers at bay. After the final whistle the Bees players questioned the referee’s decisions.
Barry Fuller argued his case but protested too much according to the referee and was shown a red card.
It was a disappointing way to end a disappointing match.
Edgar Davids and Jake Hyde had returned to the Barnet starting XI in place of Luke Gambin and Harry Crawford.
The first half lacked chances and quality. Both sides were wasteful in possession and relied on long passes forward rather than working the ball through midfield.
Former Bees striker Ben Strevens flicked a shot wide for the Daggers before Wilkinson scuffed an effort harmlessly wide.
Barnet lacked width as Davids and Jon Nurse drifted into the middle of the pitch and they struggled to create an opportunity to break the deadlock.
Shortly before the interval a low strike from Elliot Johnson found Hyde in the box. He adjusted his feet well but fired over.
It was the last chance of an uneventful half. Neither team had really threatened.
Dagenham started the second period brightly and had a good appeal for a penalty turned down when the ball struck Tom Flanagan’s hand.
Barnet lacked urgency and shots from distance from Davids and Barry Fuller didn’t test Daggers goalkeeper John Miles.
Bees goalkeeper Graham Stack had been untroubled for the majority of the contest but he produced a fantastic stop to tip a fine half volley from Medy Elito onto his crossbar.
It proved to be the last real chance of the game and both sides continued to cancel each other out.
With three minutes remaining the Bees were reduced to ten men. De Silva attempted to block a clearance from Wilkinson but caught the defender.
It was not a malicious challenge but referee Keith Hill inexplicably decided to show the Crystal Palace loanee a straight red card.
Barnet saw out the final minutes comfortably. A draw the fair reflection on a poor game.
After the final whistle several Bees players went over to the referee to question his decision. Fuller was one of them but his protestations led to the defender being shown a straight red card.
