It was close throughout but Canvey Island inflicted a slender 3-2 defeat on Wingate & Finchley in the Ryman Premier Division.
The Blues had started the game well and thought they had gone ahead when Spencer Bellotti netted in the 12th minute. However, the goal was controversially ruled out for offside.
Bellotti did open the scoring a few minutes later though as he confidently slotted the ball past Canvey goalkeeper Ashley Jones.
Canvey took control of the contest after going behind and they levelled when Bradley Woods-Garness’ looping shot found the corner.
The two sides went in level at the break but soon after the restart Wingate went back in front when Bellotti finished coolly for his second of the game.
Island soon equalised thanks to Jay Curran’s scuffed shot and six minutes from time he grabbed his second and Canvey’s third to complete victory for the hosts.
The Blues take on Cray Wanderers this evening.
