It was 20 years ago when the idea of launching a museum to celebrate the
rich heritage of Elstree and Borehamwood was first suggested.
In November 2000, thanks to the Borehamood & Elstree Times, a museum was
finally opened to tell the story of life in the area through the ages.
Situated in the same building as the newspaper's offices, it is run by
volunteers from the Borehamwood and Elstree Community History Project.
The museum features a wide range of displays, including artefacts and
memorabilia, on the history of the two settlements, from 4000 BC to the
present day.
The subjects of presentations include famous people, transport, industry,
the emergency services, crime, sport and education.
There is also a special display dedicated to those men whose names are
listed on the war memorials, with personal biographies.
The Community History Project, which has more than 200 members, was
launched in March 2000, with help from Hertsmere Borough Council and
Hertfordshire County Council.
After two roadshow exhibitions, the museum premises was secured with
funding from the borough council, Elstree and Borehamwood Town Council and
Pinnacle Insurance.
Volunteers at the museum are now gathering information and photographs from
residents, which will be used in creating themed displays in the future.
Visit the museum at 1 Drayton Road, Borehamwood, on Thursdays, Fridays and
Saturdays, between 11am and 3pm.
