A nurse has been struck off after leaving a patient naked, shivering and covered in faeces.

Wai Tsze Cheng was employed as a bank nurse at the Royal Free Hospital where she was supposed to be taking care of the female in August 2009.

But when the patient asked for her colostomy bag to be changed, Ms Cheng spoke in an aggressive manner saying she would only assist if she stood up.

The patient was then left naked, shivering, covered in faeces with the curtain to her bay open in the sight of other people on the ward.

Before leaving her shift, Ms Cheng also failed to adequately record details of what had happened.

The claims were investigated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s (NMC) conduct and competence committee.

In a report, the NMC concludes: “The panel is satisfied that the only sufficient and proportionate way to protect patients, the public and the reputation of the profession is to direct a striking-off order.”

The panel gave Ms Cheng an interim suspension order of 18 months, in which she has 28 days to appeal.

A spokeswoman for the Royal Free said: "We have apologised to the patient’s family and we would like to once again extend our sincerest apologies for the distress caused.

"The behaviour was wholly unacceptable and the trust acted as soon as the allegation was reported in 2009.

"Ms Cheng was a bank worker who worked on a temporary basis and she has not worked for the trust since. We reported the incident to the Nursing and Midwifery Council and have worked closely with them throughout their investigation."
