A couple from Cricklewood are getting ready to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary tomorrow.

Mary and Edwin Lande met 62-years-ago when they got the same bus to work every morning.

Mrs Lande worked as a secretary for Barclays Bank in Trafalgar Square and Mr Lande worked in personnel for the British Railway – but in the evenings the pair began to see more of each other.

Mrs Lande, 94, said: “We started to go out for walks in the evening and swimming in Hampstead Heath near where we lived. We spent a lot of time there. We just enjoyed each other’s company.”

The couple got married on September 12, 1952 in Felpham, where Mr Lande’s mother lived, and went on honeymoon for a fortnight in the south of France.

Mrs Lande said: “We were only allowed to take £25 each – at the time that was all the government let you take on holiday – but luckily Edwin’s mum slipped me a bit extra.

“We went to Monte Carlo and had a lovely time but each night we would add up every penny we’d spent – we just about managed."

In 1954 they moved to their current home in Cricklewood and in 1958 they had their daughter, Rosemary Phillips, who plans to celebrate with her parents on Wednesday, September 12.

She said: “They are the first people I know who have been married for 60 years – it’s quite impressive.”

The couple will also be joined by their nephews and nieces as well as their grandchildren, David Phillips, 20, and Jonathan Phillips, 17, who has made a cake especially for the occasion.

Mr Lande, 87, who was in the Home Guard and Merchant Navy during the Second World War, said: “We’re looking forward to it. It should be a good day.”
