A wheelchair user is gearing up for three bike rides in aid of people with learning disabilities.
Douglas Silas, 45, from Finchley, will take part in a 100km Night Ride tomorrow, before tackling the LA fitness Capital to Coast Cycle Challenge and a 400km Coast to Coast ride, in Sri Lanka, later this year.
Mr Silas suffers with a progressive, neurological condition called Cerebellar Ataxia which means he is slowly losing control of his sight, speech and the co-ordination of his limbs.
But he is determined to complete all three races and raise a staggering £25,000 for Norwood that supports people with learning disabilities and families in need.
Using a three-wheel recumbent tricycle, Mr Silas will cycle alongside his friends Paul Tuhrim and Stephen Harrison. All three cycled for five days through the Negev desert in 2011 and raised more than £40,000 for Norwood.
Mr Silas, who is training every Sunday with a group of cyclists, said: “I learn a lot while preparing and then doing the rides.
"I learn about the importance of having mental strength and determination, as well as physical strength.
“I also discovered there is an incredible generosity in people who are willing to help me try to help others.”
