Police could be given the power to tackle antisocial behaviour and crime associated with drinking as part of a new consultation today.
Barnet Council plans to create a borough-wide Designated Public Place Order (DPPO) to control crime, disorder and nuisance associated with drinking alcohol in public places.
If agreed, a person could be arrested or fined up to £500 if they fail to stop drinking when asked by police.
Officers would also be able to arrest anyone who fails to surrender alcohol, and people with chronic alcohol issues would be offered access to support services.
Councillor David Longstaff said: “Antisocial behaviour, whether it’s alcohol-related or not, can be a real blight on our residents’ lives and some of our town centres.
“These orders are not intended to disrupt peaceful activities, but they can, combined with the right support, be a useful tool in tackling crime and disorder associated with drinking in public places.
“That’s why we would like to hear residents’ views on proposals for borough-wide measures.”
The order would expand on the four DPPOs already in place in North Finchley, Finchley, Hendon and Cricklewood town centres.
The consultation closes on July 4. To take part, go to: http://engage.barnet.gov.uk.
