I am writing to correct your article ('Voluntary groups' funding slashed', October 5).

A proposal was made to our London Council's grants committee to discuss the possibility of repatriating funds to councils to fund voluntary sector groups local to their area. This was debated but rejected more than a month ago.

London Councils is currently reaching the end of an exhaustive consultation process which has involved the voluntary sector, councils, the Mayor of London's office and an independently chaired review board. Choosing how best to support London's diverse and ever-changing population with its complex and evolving pattern of needs is a difficult task, one not helped by inaccurate claims being repeated in the press.

The money we spend - council tax payers' money - needs to provide a positive impact on the lives of people in every section of our community, wherever they are in the capital.

To ensure this is achieved, we will be discussing further the areas we will be seeking to fund at meetings of borough representatives. A final decision will be made at the November London Councils' leaders' committee, which is comprised of council leaders from all of London's 33 local authorities.
