Smoke can be seen billowing into the air across north London as 40 firefighters battle a huge scrap yard blaze in Willesden.
People in and around the area are being advised to shut windows and doors as the smoke cloud spreads.
The London Fire Brigade says an area of the Scrubs Lane recycling centre containing 3,000 tonnes of waste metal is alight and at least eight fire engines are in attendance.
Station manager Pushminder Vagarwal, at the scene, said: “Our fire crews are working really hard to get this fire under control but it’s likely that we’ll be here for some time. There is a lot of smoke from the fire and we would advise any residents living nearby to keep their doors and windows closed.”
Firefighters were called to the scene at 2.48pm and crews from New Malden, Willesden, Park Royal, Chelsea, Hammersmith, Paddington and Bethnal Green are tackling the inferno.
The cause of the fire is not yet known.
