An elderly couple who are refusing to pay the part of their council tax that goes towards paying for the 2012 Olympics have received a final demand for £901.35 after losing their right to pay in installments.
Thomas and Rita Glenister, of Darlands Drive, Barnet, are happy to pay the portions of the tax that goes to Barnet Council, the Greater London Authority (GLA) and the emergency services, but not the £33-a-month Olympics contribution because they believe it is unfair. The council will start legal proceedings against the couple if they do not pay in full by October 11.
Mrs Glenister, 72, a former army lance-corporal, said she was not scared of going to prison. She said: "It'll be alright; you get three meals a day, they have a library, I can read. I'll do my time and get out on good behaviour soon enough."
She added that she has given the amount of money she owes to a Barnet soldier heading for Afghanistan.
