A WOMAN who fundraised for the names of fallen soldiers to be listed on war memorials in Barnet now looks to memorials in Edgware and Hendon.
Woodside Park resident, Catherine Loveday, 73, raised £10,000 from local businesses and charities to list the names of fallen soldiers from the First and Second World Wars on memorials in New Barnet and East Barnet.
As the names were being restored on the memorials in gold last week, Mrs Loveday turned her attention to memorials in Hendon and Edgware.
“Although Edgware resides in the London Borough of Harrow, it’s actually Barnet that looks after it," she said.
"However, neither of these authorities really take much responsibility. The memorial is leaning over quite badly and clearly needs attention.”
Mrs Loveday proposes that Barnet Council should seek the advice of engineers to assess whether the Edgware memorial could be altered.
Then the fundraising could begin.
"There are in fact 537 names on this memorial from World War II, with a significant number being Jewish names."
Mrs Loveday said Hendon’s war memorial, with some 225 names, is a “somewhat easier task” given its location in the middle of Hendon and the fact it consists of metal panels.
“At present one metal panel is completely missing,” she said.
Mrs Loveday saw the result of her efforts recently as the gilding of 282 names was carried out on the New Barnet memorial in Station Road by Exeter-based firm Langmead Memorials.
She predicts the Edgware memorial would require many thousands of pounds to fund remedial works.
