THE family of a teenager who died in a Colindale car crash are calling for road safety improvements.

A community was left in shock after the death of 18-year-old Zeeshan Tahir, of Kingsbury, in a head-on-collision on his way home from Hendon school, at around 3pm, on Wednesday, March 16.

Police are still investigating the circumstances of the crash but relatives are calling for road safety improvements in Colindeep Lane, where it happened, saying there is a blind spot at the entrance of scrapyard Metro Auto Recycling.

Shabana Mohammed, 38, his mother, said: “I think they should have a speed camera or road humps.

“Other parents came to the funeral and they were saying there's a lot of people who speed in that particular road so speed cameras or humps I think would be best.”

Around 2,000 people went to Zeeshan's funeral and friends and relatives continued to visit the family home, in Springfield Mount, for days afterwards.

She wants to collect a petition to present to Barnet Council in the hope of getting the issue looked at and hopes some of those who showed support in the days after the smash will sign it.

Irfan Ashraf, a friend of Zeeshan's, has added his tribute to those made in the days after the crash.

He said: “Zeeshan was an amazing friend. He told me how he wanted to go to Birmingham University to study car engineering.

“He never said 'no' to anything and always gave me good advice on anything I needed. He was a friendly caring and loving young adult, which in sorrow I say has left this world.”

A statement from Barnet Council said: “Our sympathy goes out to the family of this young man.

“The circumstances of this accident still have to be established but the council takes road safety very seriously.

“When we know more about the factors which contributed to the accident we will be better able to decide if any safety measures need to be considered at this location.”

Three teenagers travelling in the same car as Zeeshan were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and have been released on police bail until June pending further inquiries.
