A MAJOR central London station will be closed to Northern Line passengers from tomorrow until the end of the year.
Tottenham Court Road is undergoing an upgrade to help it cope with the number of passengers passing through it every day.
However, in order to achieve this Tube bosses have decided to close the Northern Line platforms until the end of November for work including increasing the ticket hall size by six times and creating step free access to the platform.
There will also be new escalators connecting platforms and four new or modernised entrances, as well as preparing for the new Crossrail platform.
London Underground's strategy director, Richard Parry, said: “Tottenham Court Road station is set to become one of the busiest and most important stations in the capital once Crossrail and the station upgrade are complete.
“The changes we are making to the station will transform it, with a massive increase in capacity, new entrances and step free access.
“But the size and scale of the works mean we will need to close the Northern line platforms until November. I ask our customers and local businesses and residents to bear with us, it will be worth it.”
Tube bosses have promised the station will reopen in time for Christmas.
