BARNET Council has launched a drive to determine how many children are being privately fostered in the borough.
Private fostering is when someone under 16, or a disabled person under 18, is being looked after for more than 28 days by someone other than a close relative.
Currently 22 people are registered in the borough, but councillors believe there are many more.
The situation can arise for a number of reasons, if parents have gone abroad to visit family, or have been sent to prison or have a long-term illness.
Councillor Andrew Harper, cabinet member for children and families, said: "Everybody has a role in keeping our children safe - whether you are a teacher, youth worker, neighbour, or just chat to the other mums at the school gate.
“If you hear about a child who is being privately fostered, please let us know immediately so we can make sure the child is being kept safely."
Families with these arrangements can be offered social worker support by the council, providing there are no safeguarding concerns.
To report private fostering, call 0208 359 5315 to arrange a visit.
