WHETSTONE Society is concerned about pedestrians’ safety after Barnet Council covered lights at crossings in the area.

The council decided to carry out a trial starting on March 1 to physically bag over pedestrian green man crossings in Totteridge Lane and Oakleigh Road North between Mogador Café and the central island.

A statement from the council said the lights were installed around six years ago when it thought the “changes could be made without overly impacting on the junction’s operation”.

It adds: “Unfortunately the high volume of traffic over the last five years has demonstrated this was not possible.

“A safety review of pedestrian accident statistics before and after the introduction of these crossings has also proved inconclusive.”

However, chairman of Whetstone Society Mack McKenny said the fact traffic has increased in the area means pedestrians need the lights to help them cross the roads safely.

Mr McKenny, who has been chairman for more than 20 years said: “Since the council decided to cover the lights it’s really very dangerous for people trying to cross the roads.

“Traffic sweeps round the corner and comes at you from High Road.

“It’s particularly worrying for the elderly, people with prams and wheelchairs and those with disabilities.

“A controlled pedestrian crossing is much needed in the area."

A statement from the council said: “The council will be monitoring the junction for a minimum of six months, with residents being invited to pass on their views during this time for consideration prior to any final decision being made.”
