PUPILS from a school in Hendon launched 100 rockets to mark their participation in International Science Week.
Years five and six at The Hyde School sent their handmade rockets soaring from West Hendon Playing Fields on Friday March 11.
The schoolchildren made the models using cardboard tubes, small parachutes and motors which conduct an electrical charge powerful enough to launch the rocket up to a height of around 500 feet.
Each child decorated their model with stickers and coloured pens, with some choosing to write on their names or names of their favourite football teams.
With the help of the school’s science coordinator and teacher Garry Yee, the pupils noted their models’ flight paths and how quickly they hit the ground.
As a result the children were able to learn about gravity and different types of forces.
Mr Yee said: “Our objective is to make science fun and real so the kids can relate to it.
“This is the first time we have done this and the feedback from the kids has been great.
“Some of the younger kids have been saying they want to build even bigger rockets that can go even higher.”
