A SYNAGOGUE in Whetstone has set up a “web stream” to broadcast its religious services over the internet.
Sha’arei Tsedek North London Reform Synagogue in Oakleigh Road North is currently carrying out a trial run of the system and hopes it will be available to use on a regular basis from May this year.
Linda Cooke, synagogue chairperson, said: “This is a wonderful innovation for any members who are ill, housebound or can’t attend a service in person for some other reason.
“Just last Saturday, relatives in Australia watched a barmitzvah as it was taking place live on their television.
“Our 784 members know we have a contemporary approach to everything we do, both within our own congregation and in the wider community and society.”
Rabbi Marcia Plumb, one of the synagogues three rabbis added: “We even have a phone conference facility which also allows housebound people mourning the death of someone close to participate in a live service with memorial prayers.”
The synagogue celebrates its Golden Jubilee this year and plans to host a number of events including a walk and picnic, a choir concert and a Rock ‘n’ Roll night.
