THE public has been urged to record Tuesday night’s full council meeting in a bid to make the process “more transparent” by an anti-cuts activist.

At the meeting councillors will vote on this year’s budget, which will see £54m cut from services in the next three years in a bid to balance the books after cuts to the central Government grant.

But activist Vicky Morris has called on members of the public to go to the meeting and record it in following advice from local government minister Bob Neil saying it should be allowed at meetings to make the process more “transparent”.

She said: “It is anachronistic for Barnet council to seek to stop residents recording these public events, as they have done up till now.

“Technologically anachronistic, but also politically, given the new emphasis on transparency in government.”

At a cabinet meeting on February 14 one Labour activist was threatened with expulsion after trying to film proceedings.

In 2009 the council ruled out webcasting meetings as neighbouring councils Haringey, Camden and Hertsmere do, on the grounds of cost.
