I wonder if Barnet Council would be prepared to explain why it has suddenly decided to commence barely needed road resurfacing works in Nether Street, in Finchley?
It beggars belief that, in this period of local authority cutbacks, the council does not feel there are more deserving causes for our council tax — care for the elderly, services for vulnerable children, etc — than perfecting the already smooth roads of one of the more affluent parts of the borough.
I hope for the sake of local democracy these plans were opposed all the way within the council chamber, and I would be keen to see any data or statistics the council could provide to back up why these works are suddenly so necessary.
What does this say of the priorities of Barnet Council that it could consider cutting front-line services, even charging for some in an easyCouncil scheme, to free up funding for repair works that will mainly benefit a few private motorists?
