THE Finchley and Golders Green MP has renewed his call for better breast screening services in Finchley.
Mike Freer’s claim comes after newly published World Health Organisation data showing Britain has the highest mortality rate for breast cancer in the European Union.
In the borough of Barnet the breast screening rate remains poor, with only 58% of eligible women being scanned against a national target of 80%.
This is also still considerably below the minimum national standard of 70%.
Mr Freer said: “The cancer mortality rate of women in this country is unacceptably high, especially as the UK is one of the best performers in the EU for the male mortality rate.
“We should be aiming to do much better.
“The local breast screening rate is extremely disappointing, and I feel there is a lack of ambition to push it towards the desired 80%.
“But most importantly of all there must be a purpose built screening unit at the rebuilt Finchley Memorial Hospital to replace the mobile unit.”
