THE Mayor of Barnet locked lips with a mannequin as part of a first aid awareness evening in Hendon.
Councillor Anthony Finn practised mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on a dummy at the event held by St John Ambulance in Our Lady of Dolours Church Hall in Egerton Gardens.
It was hosted by husband and wife Simon and Sue Gitlin to celebrate the charity’s new location after moving from The Baby Clinic in The Burroughs and to encourage people to learn first aid.
Around 100 people attended and as well as resuscitating life-size mannequins guests were given the opportunity to get hands-on and practise skills such as bandaging wounds.
Talks and demonstrations were also provided on life saving skills including advice on what to do if someone was choking, stopped breathing or was bleeding.
Mrs Gitlin, divisional officer said: “It was a success and we had lots of people enquiring about volunteering so hopefully they will follow it through.”
Young people aged between ten and 18-years-old can still join St John Cadets and learn skills such as fire prevention, sport and photography.
Adults can also sign-up to volunteer and after completion of their first aid training would be able to provide support at events such as football matches.
Another awareness day will be held on Thursday February 24 at Middlesex University in The Burroughs from 10am to 3pm to encourage residents in the borough to get involved.
Mr Gitlin, divisional superintendent said: “Tens of thousands of people die every year because they don’t get the first aid they need – we want to change that.”
