TICKET office opening hours on Tube services will be slashed from Sunday, with the borough of Barnet being particularly badly hit.

All stations will see reduced opening hours, with most stations now only operating a peak time ticket office. Only Hendon Central and Golders Green will continue to run a service through the day.

High Barnet is one of the stations worst affected, with opening hours reduced from 6.30am – 10.30pm to just an early morning service of 7am – 10.15am.

Howard Collins, chief operating officer of London Underground, said: “The success of Oyster has meant that the number of customers who use the ticket offices has declined sharply, and people are increasingly using ticket machines, the web, and automatic top-ups.

“We have made the commitment that our high safety standards will be retained - every station will remain staffed, and that every station with a ticket office will still have one with opening times that reflect demand. Staff who were previously behind under-used ticket office windows will be able to be deployed to places where they can better assist passengers.”

The changes to hours go ahead despite a number of strikes over the issue by Underground workers since Mayor of London Boris Johnson announced the plans last March.

A source at the Transport Salaried Staffs' Association trade union said: “The passengers and staff at London Underground stations will always be opposed to these cuts and continued attacks on ticket offices and the services they provide, which go far beyond just selling Oyster cards.

“Through the pressure on political representatives we did manage to the stop some of the changes.”
