A TEENAGE mugger from Muswell Hill who used a stolen mobile to phone his mother has been jailed for three years.

Dion Coppin, 19, was caught after using the Blackberry stolen during a mugging in Russell Lane, Brunswick Park, to call his mum and a friend.

The Muswell Hill Road resident had taken the phone and a wallet from a man sat at a bus stop after threatening him with a broken bottle in the evening of June 1.

Although there was no CCTV of the incident the victim gave a good description of Coppin, who had a record for similar offences, and he was arrested in August in Welwyn Garden City.

As well as matching the phone records the victim also picked Coppin out in an identity parade and although he initially denied the incident he eventually admitted robbery, but denied using the bottle.

He was charged with breach of a community order, robbery and possession of an offensive weapon and was found guilty at Wood Green Crown Court yesterday and sentenced to three years in a young offenders institution.

Detective Constable Davina Cullen, the officer in the case, said: "This is strong sentence that reflect how seriously the courts take the offence of robbery. Those who may consider carrying a weapon to commit crime should take heed.

"Coppin is a young man who has blighted his future through a mixture of greed and stupidity. For the street robber the rewards are so often small, but the penalty will be severe."
