GRITTERS spent last night on the borough’s roads ahead of the predicted snow fall.

Crews completed a total of three gritting runs during the course of the night and one in the early hours ahead of this morning’s rush hour.

They will be out again today to make sure main roads and key transport hubs and routes leading to large residential areas remain snow free.

Gritting teams have already spread over 550 tonnes of grit across the borough this winter season.

Latest council figures show over 260 tons of grit has been laid this week – almost the total amount of grit the council had in its supply in February.

On Tuesday, November 30 there was 70 tonnes of salt spread onto major road networks alone.

Hand gritting teams have also spread more than 45 tonnes of grit in many town centres while greenspaces and street cleansing teams have been replenishing grit bins.

Forecasters are predicting today will remain extremely cold with further snow showers expected during the afternoon and this evening.

Road temperatures will barely rise above freezing during the course of the day before falling to sub-zero temperatures tonight when further snow fall is expected.

Residents are advised to take extra care when using the borough’s roads and pavements due to the increased risk of ice.

Many major routes are flowing freely, but most side streets are icey.

No schools in the borough are closed today due to snow.
