CRAFTY burglars have been posing as Barnet Council workers to get access to people's homes across the borough.
The council says it has received several calls from concerned homeowners after being visited by the gang of two men and one woman, claiming to be calling about loft insulation grants.
The group are said to be smartly dressed, often carrying brief cases and wearing high visibility jackets and in one case they claimed to be working on a joint initiative with the council and British Gas.
Councillor Joanna Tambourides, who is in charge of community safety, said: "It's vital that residents are wary when opening the door to unexpected callers and if they claim to be from the council always ask to see identification.
"Genuine council officers will always carry proper accreditation to prove who they are and are unlikely to knock on your door unannounced.
"If you're in any doubt contact the council or police, or ask the person to call back at another time."
