It was good to be part of the crowd attending the Remembrance Service at Hendon War Memorial and to read your report of those participating in the parade and service, (‘Bowed in reverence’, Times Series, November 18).

Despite having led the parade and the hymn singing at the war memorial, once again no mention was made of the Hendon Band of The Salvation Army, which has given this service each year since the memorial’s dedication on its present site in 1962 and for years prior to that on its previous placement.

It might be of interest for your readers to know that, in the Second World War, 30 members of this band served in the Armed Forces, ten per cent of whom were killed in action, while others were wounded.

One member was an air crew member of the Pathfinder Squadron; his son is a current member of the band. One member was taken prisoner by the Germans and yet another by the Japanese.

In the first Gulf War, two members of the Hendon Corps of The Salvation Army served in Iraq and one was on this parade.

Laying their wreath, together with all the others who remembered, was for them an act of some poignancy.

Just a recording of the fact that this group continues to parade would, I am sure, have been appreciated.
