ROUTES around hospitals and fire, police and bus stations will be among the first to be gritted if the expected cold snap materialises this week under a new London-wide plan.

Forecasters expect snow to hit north London by Saturday, which would make it the earliest fall in 17 years.

Transport for London (TfL) has stockpiled 18,000 tonnes of road salt, twice as much as last year, to keep roads such as the North Circular A1 and A41 moving throughout the borough.

A reserve of 27,000 tonnes which all London councils will have access to has also been established.

TfL have 38 gritters and 10 gritting quad bikes ready to deploy when the temperatures plummet and London boroughs are being asked to grit certain roads to ensure key bus routes can operate.

Plans to keep Tube lines open include locating engineers at “vulnerable” locations and even running trains through the night to keep tracks warm and prevent freezing.
