TUBE users could be facing more misery after union RMT announced it is to ballot workers over possible strike action in support of a Northern Line driver.

Workers based in Golders Green, East Finchley and High Barnet will be among those asked to strike in support of Arwyn Thomas, who the union claims is facing “trumped up” charges.

Passengers have al;ready faced three walkouts by Tube workers in a row over feared job losses.

Mr Thomas has been a member of and held positions in the RMT for 29 years, leading to claims from general secretary Bob Crow of “victimisation”.

He said: “We are calling on our members to deliver resounding yes votes for action in both ballots as we send out a signal that London Underground will not be allowed to get away with picking off our activists.

“Instead of harassing our members and activists on trumped up charges management should be directing their energies into reaching a settlement to the on-going disputes over tube safety and safe staffing levels.”

However, a statement from Transport for London (TfL) called the move “irresponsible” as Mr Thomas' disiplinary procedures have not yet started.

It added: “The Northern line drive was suspended for unacceptable conduct towards London Underground colleagues with a disciplinary hearing yet to be held.

“The RMT leadership should call off this pointless and unnecessary ballot immediately.”
