A GROUP of Burnt Oak children spent a lunchtime planting flowers to spruce up an unloved patch of ground outside their school.
Youngsters from The Annunciation Infant School in Thirlby Road created a small garden on a piece of land used for littering and fly tipping last Wednesday.
The idea and plants came from Barnet Homes, who manage properties opposite the area, and gives the children a chance to watch the garden develop and tend to it.
Tracey Lees, chief executive of Barnet Homes, said: “Barnet Homes works hard to keep estates green, clean and to a good standard. We know that gardening projects involving the local community can make a lasting difference.
“We hope this project will help the children to retain a sense of pride in their neighbourhood as they grow older and to feel part of their community.”
Many local residents came out to see the children at work, including pensioners from the Hanshawe Drive sheltered housing scheme whose homes are next to the ground.
