A FATHER and daughter from Hendon are going the extra mile by walking over London's 16 bridges next month, to raise money for charity.
Laurence Stein and his 11-year-old daughter Rebecca will walk just over 12 miles to raise money for Boys Town Jerusalem, a school for disadvantaged youngsters based in Israel, on Sunday, July 25.
Mr Stein is the development director of the British Friends of Boys Town Jerusalem, and he is hoping to raise more than £10,000.
Rebecca said: "I’ve never walked nearly 12-and-a-half miles before, so I’m a bit worried. I really like London so I’m looking forward to seeing all the sights.
“Other children are also walking, so if they can manage it, so can I.”
Laurence was inspired to take on the challenge after a a 12-year-old boy completed the same walk last December and raised more than £1,400 for the charity.
Laurence said: “I’m an unfit 50 year old, so I’m slightly apprehensive about taking part, but it’s also a wonderful challenge, and I can’t wait to get to Hammersmith at 9am on July 25.
“I’m also looking forward, however, to arriving at Tower Bridge where we finish!!”
After completing the walk, the the group will enjoy a well-deserved lunch at The London Eye.
Boys Town Jerusalem opened in 1949 as a memorial to the 1.5 million Jewish children who died in the holocaust.
Most of the boys who study at the school, which can take more than 800 pupils, come from financially disadvantaged backgrounds or broken homes, and many have been victims of anti-Semitic attacks in their country of origin.
They are taught the usual academic subjects as well as about Judaism, the Torah, and Israel.
Laurence said: “I genuinely do care for the disadvantaged and poverty-stricken Jewish youngsters who study and live at Boys Town Jerusalem, on this 18-acre campus in Bayit Vegan, especially those who have come to Israel, having been the victims of anti-Semitism in the countries of their birth.”
He added: “Boys Town Jerusalem is a phenomenal, dynamic organisation, and the more people know about it, the better.”
