World cup hysteria hits Barnet as most cars fly the St Georges flag proudly. Everywhere you look the World cup encourages so much football based advertising both on T.V, in shops, and restaurants. The advertising is so prominent that ITV even showed adverts rather then the England goal against the U.S. ITV cleverly showed an advert to further the suspense of the game.
England’s first challenge was against the U.S, we once ruled that nation and it seemed the Americans wanted karmic retribution for our British rule not too mention BP leaking oil all over their coast. Many have suggested that a backdoor reparation deal between Obama and the CEO of British Petroleum (BP) could have caused the ball to slip from Green’s hands using the same oil which has plagued the beaches of the Gulf of Mexico. But I’m no fan of these eccentric conspiracies and I doubt Obama and the U.S would really benefit from an undeserved draw against England. Most games though have been defined by the pleasant: BZZZZZZZZZZZZZ sound (some have said it’s more of a: EHHHHHHHHHHHHH but I disagree) that rings through for the full 90 minutes.
One thing which confuses most people is, why Barnet council wouldn’t fly the England flag, they claimed that they have: “greater priorities to deal with”. What could be greater then the World cup? Even their Conservative leader David Cameron announced he would fly the flag and you would assume in a Darth Vader like support of Cameron the Tory Councillors would follow suite. But they didn’t. Is it some sort of historic defiance from the Tory Councillors? Having been so often whipped by the party that in this is the only choice they have power over. It took a grassroots campaign to change the decision but people must wonder why the council would make such a fuss over such a small decision. I just hope, If England do exceed national expectation by getting past the Quarter Final’s on penalties and go onto win will the council ban people from wearing England shirts or ban shouts of ‘Inger-Land?’ As I said before, I’m not a fan of futuristic conspiracy theories but Barnet council have showed the signs of being a group of anti-football, hierarchal evil geniuses, so what would stop them in the future?
