SOLDIERS marched through the centre of Potters Bar today supported by cheering crowds, as the annual Carnival returned to the town.
The members of the American Civil War re-enactment group were among around 600 adults and children taking part in the parade before the annual community event.
They were joined by majorettes, bagpipers, cheerleaders, Scouts and youngsters from local schools and even a search and rescue crew as the sun shone on the walkers.
Girl Guides were also out in force as cash raised from the event is going towards refurbishing their Malvern headquarters.
They were presented with a cheque for £1,000 from Deputy Mayor of Hertsmere Peter Knell when they arrived at the Elm Grove showground, although more is expected to be raised today.
Councillor Knell said: “It's wonderful. It's great to see so many members of the community out in force and with smiles on their faces.
“I've been treated like royalty today. I've lived here 41 years and it means a lot to be able to be a part of this is just a fantastic feeling.
“This and the Christmas light switch on are the two big events of the year in Potters Bar and it brings out everything good about the town. People come from a long way to be part of this.”
Inside the parade ground itself members of the Southern Skirmish Association entertained thousands of residents with an American Civil War re-enactment.
Dozens of community groups and local and national charities also held stalls, whilst fairground rides and games kept the younger generations entertained.
John Mills, 96, who lives on Mutton Lane, sat outside his home with his wife to watch the parade pass by.
He told the Times Series: “It's something for everyone. I've seen a lot of these go by over the years and this is up there.
“What's so good is it brings the community out and gets people together, which is good to see.”
Lyndsey and Daniel Smith were also enjoying the festivities with their children.
Daniel, 32, said: “It's been a good day so far, the sun's out and there's plenty to see and do. I have seen people I haven't seen for a while, so it does get people out more.
“It's something we always come to every year.”
