EBOG 1sts Champions Senior Division 2! You can’t finish a season more emphatically than thrashing a side who had recently taken points from all the major contenders. Back in February the mission looked lost to mid-table mediocrity; then enter Gary Haycock as a stopgap goalie. This seemed to trigger the team to realise their potential and start an amazing 9 game winning run with an aggregate goal tally of 43 – 5! Congratulations to all concerned and to the management team of Nick Page and Richard Barker who, after a rocky start, seemed to guide them on a path of steady improvement both in quality and discipline on the pitch.
Ebog 3's had a tough game away game against a team who were a close rival for third place. Darren Barker put them ahead but it was level by half-time. They needed something extra and up stepped Captain Lee Sterry for the umpteenth time to score a vital goal and clinch the win. 16 goals is a fantastic tally for a central defender and the season isn’t finished yet.
The 4ths continued their downward spiral although they were up against the top of the table side. They went 1-0 up and were not struggling until the second half. Lack of fitness was suggested by the Captain Shane Khan for them tailing off.
The 5ths returned to form with a crushing defeat of the 3rd placed side and this could have put them back in 4th place with an outside chance to pinch 3rd place in their last game next Saturday.
The 6ths need one more win but it was not to be against a strong looking 4th placed Finchleians side. Similarly the 7ths were quickly down against Finchleians and never looked likely to get back.
The 8ths relished their opportunity to show their mettle on the bottom pitch and scored some great goals. Only just over a week ago, the 8th’s Captain Matt Freeman‘s season looked over when he was on his way, by ambulance to Barnet General, with a suspected broken leg. However, in true Easter spirit he rose from the grave to score an amazing goal on Saturday from around the halfway line!
Spare a thought for CJ who is stuck in Tenerife (could be worse?) by volcanic ash and phoned the club Saturday to arrange for the Ladies kit to be collected for tomorrow’s match, which she sounded disappointed to miss.
