Young children are notoriously fussy eaters and many parents worry that their little ones aren't getting enough vitamins or calories or are concerened that they are eating too much fat, salt, sugar or additives.

As a mum herself, Gina Woolf is well aware of the issues and since the birth of her son, Lex, two years ago, she has been creating delicious home-made meals for babies and toddlers.

Although she started out just making the meals for Lex and for friends' children, Finchley-based Gina has now turned it into a thriving business, called Woolf It Down, producing a range of home-prepared dishes, made to order and frozen in handy single-servings.

Gina's delicious meals couldn't be further from the bland mush that usually makes up the bulk of commercial baby food.

Mild chicken curry, smoked haddock risotto and pasta bolognase are all popular favourites and, as Gina explains, proves that children enjoy strong flavours and textures.

"I've found that the stronger the flavour, the more they love it," she said. If you set their little taste buds alive they will want to try lots of different things."

Of course, children tend to go through fussy phases which is something Gina understands.

"Lex has always been a good eater, but even he has his moments," she said. "Yesterday for example, he decided he didn't like peas any more, but today he seems to love them again."

Because of the fickle nature of children's palates, all Gina's meals are individually made to order.

This bespoke service means that she can take into account whatever little phase the child is going through.

She can even add extra hidden vegetables by pureeing them and mixing them into sauces, so even the fussiest eaters won't object.

Gina's philosophy is very much based on providing healthy, natural foods using great ingredients.

She doesn't use added salt or additives, and uses as little fat as possible, so, for example, her home-made chicken nuggets are baked not fried, and a million miles away from the highly processed lumps you buy in supermarkets.

She also uses organic vegetables and her ingredients are kosher, with meat and milk kept separately. Nowadays wer are all more aware of what goes into the things we eat and Woolf It Down means that even the youngest foodies can enjoy the benefits of a healthy, varied and perhaps most importantly, a delicious diet that will set them up for life.
