Restrictions on parking have been, and will always be, controversial issues - but the decision to scrap Winchmore Hill's controlled parking zone (CPZ) shows that people power can triumph.
Despite the CPZ being on the drawing board for two years, council leader Michael Rye took what would seem to be the logical step in cancelling it, having received more than 400 objections.
It is unfortunate, as Enfield Council's cabinet member for the environment, Cllr Terry Neville, pointed out this week, that you cannot please all the people all of the time, but hopefully a compromise will be struck that is satisfactory for everyone concerned.
Residents can rightly feel aggrieved that commuters clog up their roads and make the area congested during rush hour, and there is no doubt some parking measures should have been introduced some time ago.
But, if Cllr Neville follows up on his word, the introduction of a one or two-hour restriction in the middle of the day, which already works well in areas like Highgate, could be the happy medium that solves Winchmore Hill's parking problems once and for all.
